Scott #96

1/2¢ Prince & Princess

The Major Re-entry

Plate Position #44

This is the well-known major re-entry on the Half Cent, showing doubling through CANADA, HALF, 1608, and the left ½. It also has the 'famous' double slipped retouches of the bottom frameline.

1/2¢ Prince & Princess

Re-entry in ‘ST’ & ‘CEN.’

Plate Position #50

This is the lesser-known re-entry on the sheet of 100, showing doubling in the 'ST' of POSTAGE and the 'CEN' of CENT.

Scott #97

1¢ Cartier & Champlain

The Major Re-entry

This is the only catalogued re-entry on this stamp so far. It shows strong doubling on the right side of the design, in the right '1' (resembling  retouching), the bottom of 1908, and in and above the 'C' of QUEBEC in the lower right corner. A block of four with selvedge attached on the left side places this stamp in the second column on the sheet of 100. The plate is not yet known.

Scott #97

1¢ Cartier & Champlain

Major Misplaced Entry 1

This is a very distinctive misplaced entry showing markings in 'NA' of CANADA, 'O' of ONE, and the upper right area of Cartier's portrait oval. The position of this stamp has been narrowed down by several position pieces to the right vertical column of a plate, between #'s 40-90.

Major Re-entry 3

Here is a lovely re-entry showing doubling in, above, and below the 'E' of ONE, on the lower right of Cartier's portrait in the white oval, and in and above the letters 'AIR.'

Scott #97

1¢ Cartier & Champlain

Major Re-entry 4

There is evidence of a misplaced entry showing in 1608, the 'C' of CANADA, the left '1,' some of the letters of ONE CENT, the outer left margin, and in several places in both portrait ovals. Subtle, but nice!

1¢ Cartier & Champlain

Misplaced Entry 2

This one was found by Bill Burden of Nova Scotia. There is evidence of a significant misplaced entry, showing lines from Cartier's garment into the white oval, as well as the central ornament between the two portrait ovals.

2¢ King & Queen

Re-entry 1

Doubling can be seen in and around the right numeral enclosure, the left edge of the portrait oval, the left edge of the elongated triangle below the ball ornament, and extensions of the inner framelines on the left.

Re-entries on the 2¢ Quebec have been very hard to come by, but Dr. Michael Sendbuehler has contributed the following three that at least prove re-entries can indeed be found on this issue.

Re-entry 2

Doubling can be seen here on the inner right 2 enclosure, the horizontal lines to the lower left of the 2, extensions of the right inner framelines, and in the floral ornament between the two portraits.

Re-entry 3

Here there are extensions of some of the lines of the inner right numeral enclosure, the background lines of the right portrait, and the horizontal lines of the inner right area of the design. Some of these latter extensions almost touch the inside of the right frame.

A re-entry on this stamp has been listed in the Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps for some time now, but in over 30+ years of specializing in re-entries, I have never seen one. Indeed, I've seen a great many touted to be the re-entry, only to find there was no doubling at all, but many, many remnants of unerased guidelines and guide dots, along with a lot of scratches and so forth. The plate was obviously put into use before it had been properly cleaned and prepared for printing. In 2010 the proof sheets in Ottawa were examined and no evidence of re-entries were found. In the 2011 Edition of the Unitrade Specialized, this listing has finally been removed at my recommendation.

Below are examples of such stamps, mistaken for re-entries, showing numerous guidelines, guide dots, scratches, etc., that SHOULD have been erased before the plate was used.

Cartier’s Arrival 1535

The Major Re-entry (left)

Plate Position #41

The Major Re-entry on this issue has been known and listed in catalogues for years. The fact that another much more minor re-entry exists on this stamp is not so well-known. (right)

The Major is one of the sharpest re-entries of the series, with almost the entire right side shifted to the right. Note the 1908, the '20' and its surrounding floral patterns, and the vertical right design. The inner frame around the ships is also doubled.

I have added a scan of a strip of three with the major in the centre. The major is NH, but as you can see, the centering is not great.

Scott #103

Cartier’s Arrival 1535

Re-entry

There are several minor re-entries on this stamp, but they have been overshadowed by the strength of the major. Indeed, these are so unknown, I have seen them offered as the major. The entire right edge is doubled, including the framelines, the floral elements around the '20,' as well as the floral design at the lower right.

Cartier’s Arrival 1535

Minor Re-entry & Retouch

This minor re-entry (the floral design to the LR of the 20) also shows an attempt to strengthen the outer vertical frame by hand, and it is a poor job, to say the least.

Numerous different examples of this appear on this stamp and have been seen by me.
