1865 Second Issue

$3 Bill Stamps - FB36 - Plate Proofs

Don Williams of Saskatoon Stamp Centre recently made some major new discoveries of heretofore unrecorded re-entries on plate proofs of the $3 Bill Stamp, Second Issue, of 1865. John Jamieson and his staff were gracious enough to provide me with 1200 dpi scans of their findings for my website, and they are presented below. They run the whole gamut, from a wonderful misplaced entry (in two different coloured centres), to major re-entries, strong re-entries and re-entries. Rather than try to sort them all here, they are presented in the order of Saskatoon's numbering system, from R1 through R13, plus two additional numbers (R14 & R15) that I have added.

I have also included scans of the sales cards that Saskatoon has mounted the stamps on, with their descriptions and prices. Many of them may still be available for purchase (I own R7-1, the misplaced entry), so if you are interested in adding any of these beautiful new discoveries to your collection, please do not hesitate to contact Saskatoon Stamp Centre through their website at <http://www.saskatoonstamp.com/>. Note that some of the items are in blocks that may contain more than one re-entry, so read the descriptions carefully to be sure you are looking at the correct images on his sales cards.

My sincere thanks go out to John Jamieson, Don Williams and Brett for their time and efforts in providing me with this wonderful new exciting material for my website!

(Note: Catalogue numbers are from E.S.J. van Dam's, THE CANADIAN REVENUE STAMP CATALOGUE, 2009 Edition, published by The Unitrade Press, Toronto, Ontario.)

$3 Bill Stamp (SSC R6)

Re-entry

This stamp shows a slight doubling of 'ADA' in CANADA, as well as parts of the triangular spandrels on both left and right.

Interestingly, there is also a distinct additional red curve to the left of the portrait, which is also found in a couple of the other stamps seen below. This strongly shifted curved line does not 'fit' with the other re-entered details in 'ADA.'

$3 Bill Stamp (SSC R7-1)

Red Frame + Blue Centre

Misplaced Entry

This stamp shows a marked shift of 0.5 mm which, according to my Classification System of Re-entries and Misplaced Entries (found elsewhere), qualifies it being termed a misplaced entry, rather than just a major re-entry.

The most obvious details are seen in the letters of CANADA, but is also seen throughout the design...both upper value ornaments and the right '3'; the lower right ornament; both of the triangular spandrels to the left and right of CANADA (note especially the lovely downward shift of the left one); in the bottom margin below the 'E' and 'O' and curled ornaments; and note all of the 'extra' red inner portrait oval lines on the left (under the blue).

The addition of the imprint also adds to the beauty of this stamp.
